When viewing houses as part of the house-buying process, there’s no better feeling than seeing that perfectly designed living room or an amazing brand-new kitchen. While those are great things to get excited about, they’re just surface-level. When looking at potential homes in Rossville, Woodrow, Pleasant Plains, etc. on Staten Island, the best way to avoid a financial disaster (i.e., a money-pit) is by examining beyond what your eyes see. The following are 5 red flags that will help guide you when reviewing a home so you can be confident when making a solid investment in areas such as Annadale and Huguenot.
1. Signs of Water Damage
Water stains in fresh paint usually mean that there is some sort of leak occurring somewhere in your home (plumbing problem) and/or there may be some form of poor drainage. If you don’t find the cause of the leak right away, it will become much costlier to have to fix once mold has been able to grow. On Staten Island where we get a wide range of weather conditions each year, with a lot of moisture in the air, this situation can become a very serious one.
-
Quick check: Check your ceiling closely for signs of water staining — especially under all bathroom sinks on upper floors. Also, when checking your walls, check the baseboard areas as well as the inside of your sink cabinets. Warped wood and light yellow discoloration on your walls and ceiling could also be an indication of water damage.
2. A Sagging or Aging Roof
A replacement roof can be the most costly of all home repairs. You may have a chance to notice some visible signs from your driveway. The age of a Staten Island home’s roofing system could fail to handle the severity of the harsh New York winters.
-
Pro Tip: Are there missing, curled or broken shingles? Does the line along where the roof meets appear uneven or are the edges sagged? This could indicate serious structural problems with your Staten Island roof.
3. Foundation Cracks
Homes all settle at some point, causing tiny hair line crack in your home. However, large or increasing cracks could mean you have a problem with your foundations which is a huge financial burden. The unevenness of the land or the movement of the soil in different areas of Staten Island may be contributing to the foundation problems for you.
-
Warning sign: Large horizontal cracks in your foundation walls, doors that will not open and close properly, and noticeable cracks above windows frames and doorways are warning signs.
4. Outdated Electrical Systems
Older homes, common in established Staten Island neighborhoods, often have electrical systems that can’t handle modern demands, posing a fire hazard.
-
Smart move: Check the electrical panel. Old fuses instead of breakers, or messy DIY wiring, signals a likely expensive upgrade is needed.
5. Unpleasant Odors (or Too Much Fragrance)
A home should smell clean, not overpowering. While musty smells can indicate mold, excessive air fresheners might be masking other issues.
-
What to consider: Sellers might use heavy fragrances to mask pet odors, smoke, or dampness. Trust your nose!
